Essential Boundaries for Mom Entrepreneurs and Their Husbands

Following these essential boundaries will help entrepreneurial couples ease the transition to working together.

Work at home, entrepreneurs, home-based business

In the beginning, I thought it was going to be a breeze when my husband, Terry, joined me working full-time in my business. If anyone could do it, we could! We already had a healthy relationship built on trust and respect.

We communicated well.

We both strongly believed in what we were doing. We understood the need to help each other with the children, keeping the house, and with the business.

We planned to allow for fluctuations in income to keep stresses over money to a minimum. Yet I still wasn’t prepared.

For anyone considering working with your spouse, here are 3 Essential Boundaries for Entrepreneurial Couples to help to ease your transition:

1. Clarify expectations for work/home.

Nothing can prepare you for the blurring of boundaries and turf that occur as you transition into working together. When you join together with your spouse, most likely, both of you have experienced success throughout your careers, and have developed your own working style.

Suddenly you have a whole new dynamic in your relationship with your spouse you must learn to work through. I always knew that we had different gifts and talents: Terry is very techie and he loves to write, and I am a people person who is an administrative whiz.

Even though I should have probably seen it coming, I was still surprised at the difference in our work styles. I multi-task all day long, and he prefers to work on one project at a time.

Just like being newlyweds all over again, we had to put some effort into getting to know each other on a whole new level to be able to work well together.

Beth Butler, creator of the Boca Beth Program has some helpful tips for clarifying expectations with your spouse. “I make us lunch each day and we try to talk about BOCA BETH items that are pressing. I

t’s our time to reconnect – he works from home for the wine company he represents and I work from home sharing my passion for second language learning with young children.

A funny mix, but it works! We talk about what each of us has planned the next day so there are no surprises – and I use that time to ask for his help. I can’t expect him to guess what I need so I have learned to be very specific.”
2. Schedule time for love.

Most entrepreneurial couples complain they have less time together than before. It is possible to work beside your spouse in the same office all day long and barely speak on a personal level.

How difficult is it to turn off your cell phone and talk a walk with your love?

It is imperative to make it a point to schedule time for your relationship so that the business does not overtake it. Terry and I plan ahead to sneak away for lunch or to take a break at Starbucks.

We have found if we don’t take the time to schedule these lunch or coffee dates, then they are less likely to happen as we work to meet deadlines or get a project done.

We haven’t yet been able to master scheduling “regular dates”, but it’s next on our list of priorities in order to help keep our close relationship.

3. Schedule time for yourself.

It can be a shock when you suddenly have so much time with your spouse. In your previous life, they left at 7 AM and came home at 6 PM, and then you discussed your day during dinner.

Now you spend most (if not all) of the day with them, and during dinner, there is nothing new to discuss. Where is the time for you? Karyn Fagan, Founder of Team Women, tells “We both have hobbies that we love outside of the house so we have that important away time.”

15 Easy Steps to Starting Your Small Business BY EVE JACKSON — 2006

When I was first starting up my business, I searched for a good article on startup, and couldn’t find any, so I decided to write this short guide.

starting a small business, a small business startup guide

Yeah, sure it’s easy, and of course, that title is a little tongue in cheek. It takes a lot of hard work to get off the ground. But, it’s worth every hour I’ve spent getting to where I am now.

When I decided to start my communication and image consulting business, I tried hard to find a good startup guide. I couldn’t find any that had all the steps. So, I decided to write one. So far, it’s mostly just the bare-bones outline (which is long enough as it is) you see in this article.

I’ll be adding to it every week or two, and writing more detailed articles on all the steps, so try to stop by and check it out from time to time. Let me know how I’m doing. Shoot off an email to me if I’ve forgotten something or you have questions.

Before you spend so much as a dollar, talk to a few experts. Go to the library or get on the internet and research, research, research. Take a little time to make sure entrepreneurship is right for you.PASSIVE AND RESIDUAL PART TIME INCOME

Make a pro and con list of business ownership, and evaluate yourself honestly. How many characteristics do you have in common with successful entrepreneurs? Is your financial position strong enough? Do you have the necessary technical and management skills?

You’re not going to be the perfect entrepreneur. Nobody is. But in order to make yourself the best entrepreneur. you can be, consider ways to compensate for any weaknesses you might have.

I’m from Canada, so the government agencies I’ve mentioned in this guide are Canadian, but really, they can be used by anyone. All you have to do, if you’re from somewhere other than Canada, is find out where you need to find some of the things I’ll talk about.

Some of the steps might be slightly different, and you may not have to worry about things like GST for example, but I’m sure you’ll find this discussion helpful all the same.

These steps to starting a business are in reasonably good order, but you might find yourself varying from it under your particular circumstances. That really isn’t a big deal, as long as you get most of it done.

There are some steps you’ll be able to skip as well, but please don’t skip any of the “big ones”, which I’m sure you’ll pretty much figure out from taking a look at the list.

So, assuming you’ve done your evaluation and you still want to start a business, take a deep breath, and let’s get started.

1. Conduct a feasibility study of your business. Describe your typical customer, your product, and your competitors. Who will your suppliers be? What will you charge for your product? How will you market your product? These are just a few of the questions you need to answer.

2. Write a complete business plan for your company, using the information you gathered from your feasibility study. This vitally important often overlooked step needs to include a description of your company, its goals, competitors, market, financial information, and of course, how you intend to meet your goals.

3. Get your financing in place. There are many ways to finance your business, from your own savings to personal credit cards to bank loans. If you need credit, know your business plan from front to back and maybe even sideways.

4. Decide what kind of structure your company will have. From a legal standpoint, there are three basic choices, sole proprietorship, partnership, and incorporation, each with advantages and disadvantages.

5. Choose a name for your company and check on name availability. Naming your company is highly individual, but it’s the first thing associated with your business, so choose your name carefully.

You’ll need to do a NUANS (Newly Upgraded Automated Name Search) report, which checks your name choices for uniqueness against a database of other business names. A reserved name is valid for 90 days.

6. Decide whether you want to register federally or provincially and register your company. If you register federally, you’ll also have to register provincially, which almost doubles the cost. You don’t have to have a lawyer process them for you, but it might be a good idea to at least consult with one.

You can get the forms from your local government officials, have them faxed to you or download them. You can fax or email printed copies, or complete the forms online

7. Contact Canada Revenue Agency Business Window for your business number, and to register for GST/HST, payroll, corporate income tax, and import/export (if applicable).

You can also contact the CRA if you need general information about business expenses. Chances are you’ll have to collect GST, but you may want to register for a GST number even if you don’t have to collect it because of input tax credits.

8. Decide whether you need to collect PST. If you do, you need to submit “Registration as a Vendor” documents with your province.

9. Determine whether there are special permits or licenses in your municipality. It’s highly unlikely that your municipality does not have special permits or licenses.

10. Develop the marketing materials you decided on in your business plan. They should include at least a company identity package, press kit, and website. Your identity package is your logo, business card, and letterhead. A press kit can include letters of introduction, biography sheets, press releases, articles, and a brochure. In today’s electronic age, printed materials aren’t enough. You need a website that looks professional, matches your printed material, and has a great copy. You’ll also want to make sure it’s optimized for search engines.

11. Set up your business bank account and record-keeping system. Your banker will need to see your incorporation documents, and you should probably set up more than one account so you can keep track of your finances better. Record-keeping is required, and can be done manually or with a computer program.

12. Purchase insurance. There are many different types of insurance, but most probably your company will need at least one. For example, if you’re going to have employees, you need to contact the Worker’s Compensation Board.
Depending on your type of business, you might want to contact them even if you don’t have employees to insure yourself.

13. Contact potential creditors and set up credit terms. You should have researched suppliers when you were doing your feasibility study. Now is the time to contact them.

14. Decide where your business will be located. Lease your business space. Alternatively, you could choose to start your business from home if it’s feasible. There are advantages and disadvantages to starting your business from home. You have tax write-offs for example, but sometimes your image suffers.

15. Purchase supplies and office equipment. You’ll need too many things to list here, and of course, each business has different needs. You might need a fax machine and printer. You’ll probably need a computer. You’ll definitely need paper, pens, pencils and a calculator.

Congratulations! Go out, buy yourself a bottle of champagne and celebrate. You’re about to embark on a most exciting journey. And may I be the first to wish you good luck and prosperous times in your business venture
.
As promised, here’s my email address so you can ask questions, make comments or add steps to my list. Or, if you want, you could just drop me a line to let me know how your small business is doing. I’d really like to know.

7 HABITS OF OUTRAGEOUSLY SUCCESSFUL WORK AT HOME BUSINESS —STARTING A BUSINESS ON A SHOE STRING WITH LITTLE INCOME

7 Habits of Outrageously Successful Work At Home Businesses

Do you ever wonder why some homebased businesses are outrageously successful while others barely get off the ground? It’s no secret that some work at home maverics have cracked the code. Discover 7 Habits ro creating your own work at home empire.

Work from home, work at home, home based income businesses, home based career

You’ve read the ads or seen the infomercials. “Build a six or seven figure income while lounging in your pajamas in your work at home business.”

For many people who hear this, their scam detector goes up and they become defensive.

Why? Because they have heard countless horror stories of people who have lost their shirt trying to create a business from home.

However, the truth is there are thousands of home based entrepreneurs around the country who have cracked the code, created their place in the world and taking it to the bank.

o how did they do it? Why do some people struggle and never ever break even while others create outrageously successful homebased careers?

There are certain habits which I believe are consistent with all of these enterprises. Here are seven habits or traits when implemented work to insure an outrageously profitable venture.

1. Find a hungry target market and look for a product or service to meet their needs. I am surprised how many frustrated entrepreneurs miss this.

What often happens is someone gets excited, hit by an entrepreneurial seizure and tries to start a business with a product or service and feels it will sell simply because of their emotional attachment. Keep your mind open when looking at home based business income opportunities.

However, make sure someone wants to buy whatever you have to sell before you jump in.

Don’t get me wrong you want to have a passion for what you do. However, if you love 8 track tapes it might be a problem.

And depending on your age you might be thinking, “What’s an 8 track tape?” Get my point? However, if you find a group of people who are hungry for what you have is like shooting fish in a bucket.

When you find a group that has a problem they want solved they will pay you to do it.

2. Understand nothing happens until a sale is made. I am amazed at how many budding entrepreneurs say they hate sales. This is unfortunate because everything else in a business is an expense. If you don’t have sales coming in the door eventually the doors will close.

Sales and marketing if done correctly is the engine to a company’s success. The key is to add value to the customer at every opportunity.

One of the vital things to remember is the first time you obtain a client is the most expensive. But the real wealth is built when you have the opportunity to sell to a customer over and over again.

Some companies even take a loss to get the customer in the pipeline because they realize the real money is on the back end and the true profit is in the lifetime value of the customer.

3. Develop a strong team. One of the traits that will accelerate the success of any business is the leverage generated by the help of others.

Robert Kiyosaki Author of Rich Dad Poor Dad says, “Business and investing are team sports.” The average investor or small-business person loses financially because they do not have a team.

Instead of a team they act as individuals who are trampled by very smart teams.”

While you are building a home based business you don’t want to do it alone. There are only 24 hours a day and you can’t do everything.

ou want to look for opportunities to outsource all non revenue generating activities. Successful proprietors don’t waste a lot of time on filing and organizing.

4. Focus on the business not just working in the business. What separates you from being able to create a company that provides you with great income and lifestyle versus one that you are chained to the doors is a matter of focus.

Successful entrepreneurs focus on the big picture.

I’m saddened when people say, “No one can do what I do.” This might be true however it presents a great challenge. You are now a slave to your business. The business no longer serves you.

The goal must be to take “you” out of as much of your business as possible.

Look for ways to remove you, automate and systemize the process. One of the ways to do this is to use the leverage of technology.

You might want to use a website that allows people to order your product or service 24/7. Or you might write a book which can be sold while you are sleep. Get the picture.

5. A highly successful home based business has a central theme or mission. Many home based businesses never reach success because they are trying to do too many things at the same time.

You might be saying, “But I want to create multiple streams of income.”

The problem with multiple streams of income can be a nightmare if approached incorrectly. New entrepreneurs often make the mistake of trying to create several profit centers from non aligned businesses.

For example, you will find people who try to start real estate, network marketing and internet marketing all at the same time.

The reason you will almost never have success with this strategy is you can not build momentum. Each business has a totally different business model and you can’t leverage the energy of one to another.

However, the successful home based entrepreneur understands the law of momentum. For example, if you were an author one of your products would be the book.

However, you could spin that product into an empire by leveraging it into an e-book, tape set, work-book, seminar, boot camp and coaching program.

Do you see the power of having one central product or theme and how you can leap frog to success? You want to be focused and committed to a central theme.

Once you have success you can add another stream of income. This trait is one of hidden keys to success.

6. Resilient and quick to adapt to change. This is one of the distinct advantage solo-entrepreneurs have over large companies. Often time’s large corporations invest thousands of dollars in a project and even when they know it’s not working they are slow to change.

In Corporate America this may not kill a business because one mistake is just a cog in the wheel.

However, in small business your ability to change on a dime allows you test things and when things work you do it with massive all out action. And when something is not what working you simply let it go, test something else and move forward.

7. Commit to continual education. Now, I am not talking about another degree or certificate. There are plenty of people with plaques on their walls that aren’t able to create the income and lifestyle they want.

However, I love the quote by one of the leading experts in self-development. Jim Rohn says, “Formal education will make you a living; self education will make you a fortune.”

Personal development and specialized knowledge often is the difference between a fledgling operation and one that has an outrageously bottom line.

Why? Because successful people know that the best investment they can make is in self.

Make sure that you are always staying ahead of the curve and immerse yourself in your area of expertise. You can do this by attending seminars, tele-classes, boot camps or participating in coaching programs.

Do you want to build wealth from home? Cut your learning curve by modeling one or all of these traits from successful home based businesses.

You will find when you model those who have had success you will too if you embody the same traits. Start today and you will be on your way to outrageous success.

5 Reasons Why You Need A Work-At-Home Schedule

After studying my time and chatting with some other work-at-home folks, I discovered five reasons to embrace the schedule

business, start business, home business, internet business, work from home, work at home, ecommerce, ebusiness, online business

One of the attractions of working at home is the vision of freedom it invokes — no time clock, no timesheets, and no one to account for how you spend your time.

Yes, it is an attractive proposition, but like so many attractive propositions there is a heavy downside — you are likely wasting a lot of time.

My husband spends time every day filling out these large spreadsheets to account for his day. He works for a large engineering company and his day often encompasses work on a variety of projects for different clients.

He loathes the activity and I have always dismissed it as a waste of time — that is until my home business recently took off and I realized there simply wasn’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all my goals. Your Internet Business: How to Succeed Where Others Fail

When you know what to look for, it’s not difficult to separate the best Internet business opportunities from the dregs.

work from home, internet business, business opportunity, make money online

If you’re in the market for a business opportunity, the chances are good that you’ve explored a variety of ways to make money online and work from home.

In truth, there are so many Internet business opportunities out there that it’s almost impossible to tell the best from the rest.

The grim reality is that, while thousands of people launch online businesses in the hope of achieving financial freedom, the majority end up making very little money at all, or worse, paying out more money to their uplines than they’re ever able to recoup.

The good news is that, with the right partnership, you can promote your existing business while multiplying your revenue streams. That way, you don’t have to rely on a single, make-or-break source of income. It’s a bit like planting a garden.FREE INFORMATION

It would never cross your mind to plant a single seed in the spring and count on that to feed your family throughout the summer. Instead, you’d plant many varieties of seeds, knowing that one or more will bear fruit as the seasons progress.

The Internet business partner you choose should be one that can provide you the one thing that is the downfall of most work from home opportunities: training.

All too often, people who intend to succeed come up against their own limitations and fail to properly market their products.

In our garden analogy, that’s like planting your seeds in a drought – why bother? The company you select should have a proven track record of Internet marketing success, and give you the water spigot and hose you need to tend to your business garden.

So, make sure to look for a company that provides you with training on topics ranging from online and offline marketing to back office functionality and goal setting. They should also be equipped to provide you with tutorials on a wide variety of powerful marketing techniques.

After all, there’s stiff competition on the Internet, and in order to successfully compete, you need to know all there is to know about methods such as article marketing, blogging, email marketing, banner advertising, press releases, pay-per-click advertising, and viral marketing – just to name a few.

At the same time, being knowledgeable about Internet marketing doesn’t mean that you need to reinvent the wheel. Instead, look for a business opportunity that provides you with tools like professional lead capture pages, automated follow-up, a sales center, and a secure website.
